Boat Cruises on Lake Ihema

Overview

Lake Ihema is the largest lake in Akagera National Park and the second-largest lake in Rwanda after Lake Kivu, it is located in the eastern part of the country near the border with Tanzania and plays a crucial role in the park’s ecosystem and is one of the key attractions in the park. The lake covers an area of 90 square kilometers and is relatively shallow with an average depth of 5 to 7 meters and an elevation of about 1,292m above sea level. The lake is part of a larger wetland system that includes other lakes, swamps, and the Akagera River. These wetlands are essential for maintaining the park’s biodiversity and serve as important water sources for both wildlife and surrounding communities.

Lake Ihema is a paradise for birdwatchers, home to over 480 bird species with notable species like the African fish eagle, papyrus gonolek, herons, egrets, cormorants, and various species of kingfishers. The surrounding papyrus swamps are also a haven for rarer species like the shoebill stork and the elusive papyrus canary. The lake is also inhabited by large populations of hippos and Nile crocodiles, which are commonly seen by visitors. The shores of Lake Ihema are frequented by various mammals, including elephants, buffaloes, and antelopes, especially during the dry season when water sources become scarcer in the park. Sunrise and sunset cruises are particularly breathtaking with the soft light adding to the magical quality of the amazing scenery.

A boat cruise in a national park is a guided boat tour conducted on a lake, river, or other water body within the boundaries of a national park and it always starts and ends at the same point.. These cruises are designed to allow visitors to explore the park’s natural beauty from the water, offering a unique perspective on the park’s landscapes, wildlife, and ecosystems.

A boat cruise on Lake Ihema is one of the most popular and rewarding activities in Akagera National Park. Lake Ihema, the largest lake in the park and the second-largest in Rwanda offers visitors a unique perspective on the park’s diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes. These cruises are led by experienced guides who provide insights into the local wildlife, ecology, and history of the area. The cruises normally take between 2-3 hours depending on the preferences of the tourists with morning, afternoon, and evening times available for options. The morning or afternoon cruises are ideal for spotting wildlife as animals are more active in the cooler hours and animals also come to the lake to take some water when it is hot and the animals need to cool off respectively.  However, some visitors who prefer private boat trips also have that option, and sunset cruises are also popular for the beautiful evening light and watching the beautiful views.

These boat cruises are booked through Akagera National Park’s visitor center and it’s always advisable to book in advance, especially during the peak seasons. Safety is very important as life jackets and other safety equipment are provided to ensure a smooth and safe cruise conducted by trained guides.

Boat cruises offer excellent opportunities for photography. Whether it’s capturing close-up shots of wildlife, panoramic views of the landscape, or the reflection of the sky on the water, the cruise provides a unique vantage point for photographers. A cruise on Lake Ihema is memorable as it gives a tourist the chance to immerse themselves in the natural beauty and wildlife of Rwanda for nature lovers, birders, or one who just wants to relax on the water.
