Uganda is known as the ‘Pearl of Africa’ for its beautiful nature as described by Winston Churchill, the prime minister of England in 1908, making it one of the highly ranked destinations to visit. However, it is also especially known for its diverse wildlife scene, rich cultural heritage, welcoming people, and unique experiences. Uganda has steadily gained recognition as a top African destination for eco-tourism, wildlife adventures, and cultural immersion. Known for its wide range of species including the gentle giants in Bwindi forest and Mgahinga, over 1000 bird species with 27 endemics, and a diverse array of animals including the Big 5, Uganda is certainly a country one should have the desire to visit as they would be spoilt for choice. With 10 national parks, 13 wildlife reserves, 13 wildlife sanctuaries, and 5 community wildlife management areas, which offer an exceptional experience to tourists both from within and outside the country.

Primate trekking tours
Uganda is renowned for its primate trekking experiences, offering opportunities to observe mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, golden monkeys and other primates in their natural habitats. These treks provide unforgettable wildlife encounters, contribute to conservation efforts and support local communities. The tours are led by experienced local guides and park rangers; they last about 1- 6 hours, depending on the location of the tracked primates and terrain. Once located, the tourists have an hour to observe the beautiful primates feeding, grooming, interacting, and nesting.
The key primate trekking destinations in Uganda are Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for mountain gorillas, Kibale Forest National Park known as the ‘Primate capital of the world for chimpanzees, Kyambura Game Reserve known as the ‘Valley of Apes’, Kalinzu Forest, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Budongo Forest, and Ngamba Island. All these locations have other primates like black and white colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, red colobuses, l’hoest’s monkeys, olive baboon, vervet monkeys, galagos, mangabeys, and pottos; other mammals and various bird species for the viewing.
Permits are needed for one to enjoy this experience, and it is done in groups of eight people, and the permits need to be booked in advance to avoid any inconveniences. Best done during the dry seasons of June-September and December-February as the trails are less muddy, which makes trekking a lot easier.
Primate habituation tours
Primate habituation experiences offer unique opportunities to spend extended periods observing and participating in the process of acclimating primates to human presence. These experiences are available for both chimpanzees and mountain gorillas, providing deeper insights into their behaviors and social structures. With a guide, a research team, and a ranger, a group of 4-6 people will be allowed to find the primates, which will take 1- 8 hours, and 4 hours with them once located. During these 4 hours, you will observe how they look after their young ones, how they copulate, feed, hunt, patrol, build their nests within their habitat, and the naming process.
Habituation is done in Bwindi Impenetrable in Rushaga sector and Kibale Forest National Park for mountain gorillas and chimpanzees respectively. Special permits are required for both habituation experiences and are limited, hence should be booked in advance through Uganda Wildlife Authority or reputable tour operators. The best time for this experience is during the dry seasons of June-September and December-February as the trails are less muddy, which eases trekking.
Wildlife safari group tours

The best time for wildlife viewing is during the dry season, especially for the great migration in East Africa and optimal game viewing. and newborn animals are best viewed during the wet season, sometimes, however, the vegetation is thicker, which makes viewing harder for wildlife.
