Volcanoes national park was established in 1920s, however it became so famous after Dian Fossey established a gorilla research center between Mountain Karisimbi and Mountain Bisoke. Dian Fossey later on focused so much on gorilla conservation where she met a lot of resistance from the poachers and those who were benefiting from trading park products. Dian Fossey discovered that to habituate gorillas you have to first win trust from the Silverback which is the male dominant of the group and she was very successful in doing this and she made it look so easy. Dian Fossey was later attacked and murdered in her room and her body was buried in the park, as you are on this safari, you will have to visit her graveyard.
Day 1: City tour and transfer to volcanoes national park
On your first leg of the trip, our driver guide will receive you from the airport/hotel, brief you about you 3 days Rwanda gorilla tour and mountain Bisoke volcano hike and then set off for a city tour. You will have to visit Genocide memorial center, you will listen to so many stories that led to 1994 massacre, you will proceed to visit presidential museum, visit local markets, artisans, thereafter, you will go for lunch before you embark on the journey to Volcanoes national park. You will arrive in the park in the evening, check-in the lodge, and later be transferred to gorilla guardian village also known as Ibyi’wacu cultural center. This place started as the place where tourists would go to buy souvenirs, but later it was face-lifted and transformed into one of the best cultural leading centers that Rwanda celebrates. You will be entertained through dances, listen to different stories, buy some souvenirs in case you want and in the evening, you will retire to the lodge for diner and overnight.
Day 2: Mountain Bisoke Hiking
Arise in the early morning, grab a scrumptious breakfast, get your packed lunch box, meet your driver guide who will transfer you to the park headquarters for a briefing about Mountain Bisoke hiking, then be transferred to the starting point where you can hire porters who will help you to carry your luggage, then embark on hiking which will take you about 4 to 6 hours depending on your hiking fitness. You will arrive at the summit where you will be glad to achieve magical view of the crater on top of the volcano, you will have to see different parks including Virunga national park, Rwenzori ranges, Mgahinga national park as well. You will enjoy your lunch while you are in the sky, relax a bit, and then descend to the starting point where you will find your driver guide waiting to receive you and then transfer you to Karisoke research center to see Dian Fossey graveyard, then continue to the lodge, for relaxation, dinner and enjoy your last overnight in the jungle.
Day 3: Gorilla trekking and departure
Greet a new day with a delicious breakfast, be transfer to Kinigi which is the park headquarters and this is where you will be briefed about gorilla trekking in volcanoes national park. You will be allocated a gorilla family to track, head to the off-beaten paths in the forest, you will be with a ranger guide who will help you to locate gorillas, spend an hour in their presence, take pictures and videos, as you look out for gorillas, you will be impressed by the sights and sounds of birds, you will later return to the lodge, freshen up and depart for Kigali where you will be dropped at the airport thus marking the end of your 3 days Rwanda tour.
